I am african american have really thick, but long hair. It was a little past my shoulders. I had a lye relaxer put in my hair about a year ago to make it more managable. The no lye relaxers do not straighten my hair very good. I didn't have the lye relaxer left in too long beacuse I didn't want my hair bone straight.
Since then my ends have been breaking off. I do a hot oil treatment every month, I'm easy on my hair when I comb it, i trim my ends but they keep breaking.
Without a realxer my hair is so thick its hard to put it in a single pony tail. But with it my hair keeps breaking and getting shorter and shorter.
If I press my hair without a relaxer in it, the press only lasts about 3 days becuase my hair immediatly waves up when i get hot.
Does anyone know if a texterizor is better for my hair or what is the best lye relaxer I can use so my hair doesn't keep breaking off?
Thank you for your help.
Is a texterizor less harsh then a relaxer for african american hair?
The important thing with relaxing your hair is touching up the new growth.
What happens when the new growth comes , is that your hair will break off at the weakest point.
A texturizer is indeed less harsh then any type of relaxer you use.
It does however seem to me that you are putting way to much heat on your hair. It is generally not a good idea to press relaxed hair.
You need a diffuser or a thermal brush, both need a blow dryer.
The diffuser goes on the end of the blow dryer and will help dry your hair while diffusing the heat and making a nice wave in your hair.
The thermal brush heats up from the heat of the blow dry and will help any relaxed style become more straight without having to use an extra strength relaxer or excess heat like that from a straightening comb.
Make sure you use a deep set conditioner on your hair and leave it on for at least 20 mins.
Use a plastic cap and go under a dryer if you have one.
If not wrap your head in a towel to help create a heat set.
Good luck.

I don't know how you use yours, but my texterizer makes text.

if you dont want to get a perm, try getting your hair washed and blown out...
hope that works.

Yes it is less harsh but it depends on the texture of your hair. Like with mine my beautician recommended I didn't get one because my ends are to fragile and would cause spilt ends. So it all depends on texture. And the texturizer doesn't make your hair straight it just softens the wave pattern and it sounds like you want it straight. Ask your hairdresser for their opinion.
