it depends on your hair texture. If you have coarse hair, a hot comb works better. If your hair shaft is more fine and smooth, than a flat iron. I actually use both, a hot comb for serious straightening and then a ceramic ion iron to "silk it out"

I find that a flat iron works better and is less damaging.

a Flat iron make sure it's ceramic though they get all the build up off your hair and make it soft and shiney
